What is SSL?

SSL Wildcard

SSL certificates are fundamental to online security. They are used to establish an encrypted connection and allow secure transmission of data between a browser or user’s computer and a server or website.

  • Creates a secure connection between a browser and a server
  • Encrypts communication to protect the sensitive information your customers provide you with.
  • Places a padlock next to your website address in the browser
  • Certifies the identity of an organisation

Standard SSL (Domain Validated) certificates are the easiest and most common type of SSL certificate. OV and EV Certificates also authenticate the identity of the company or organization holding the certificate, providing greater confidence to end users.

With our SSL* certificate services, you won’t have to follow manual steps to configure and install new certificates every year. We automatically generate a renewal mandate when your certificate is nearing the end of its validity period. After payment, we will automatically configure, validate and provide your new certificate for you.

* Your domain must be hosted by the same hosting provider that sold the SSL certificate and the server must use cPanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin.

Help me choose the right type of certificate

While the need for online security is universal, not all SSL certificates are the same. The following guide is designed to help you decide which type of certificate is right for you.

Domain Validation (DV)

  • Verifies only the ownership and control of the domain name
  • Issued in a few minutes
  • Maintains compliance with the browser
Ideal for non-critical websites

Think of the DV as getting a library card – no confirmation of who you really are, very minimal requirements to obtain it and it is issued very quickly.

Organisation Validation (OV)

  • Enhanced validation, including verification of the applicant’s identity
  • Issued within one day
  • Maintains compliance with the browser
Ideal for more sensitive websites such as login pages

Think of the DV as getting a library card – no confirmation of who you really are, very minimal requirements to obtain it and it is issued very quickly.

Organisation Validation (EV)

  • Standards-based authentication approach, representing the highest level of authentication for SSL Certificates
  • Usually issued within 1-3 days
  • Maintains compliance with browser and other industry specifications
Ideal for sensitive websites, such as e-commerce, online banking, account registrations

Think of an EV like getting a passport – much more stringent procedures, longer turnaround time and more verification of who you are than with a library card or a driver’s license. It is internationally recognised as the most reliable way to verify your identity.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL certificates enable data encryption on the Internet and allow secure transmission of data from a web server to a browser. With SSL, your website can use the https protocol and will display a padlock in end-users’ web browsers to indicate that the connection is secure.

Why do I need an SSL certificate?

SSL certificates are an essential part of the internet. Not only do they encrypt the communication between your computer and the server where a website is located, but they also provide verification that a website is what it claims to be.

What are the different types of SSL?

There are 3 different levels of control on which SSL certificates are based. Validated region (DV) , validated organization (OV) and extended validation (EV). The main difference between the certificate types is the information required and validated by the Certificate Authority, RapidSSL, GeoTrust and DigiCert, in order to issue a certificate. Higher certificate levels require more information, which is often displayed in the browser bar. EV SSL, for example, turns the browser bar green and displays the organization’s name to visitors to build more trust.

What is a Wildcard SSL Certificate

An SSL Wildcard certificate provides the same encryption and authentication capabilities as other SSL certificates, but can also be applied to an unlimited number of subdomains of a website. An SSL Wildcard certificate supports the root domain (example.com) and its subdomains. Learn more

What are the advantages of an EV SSL certificate?

EV or Extended Validation certificates are the highest SSL class available and provide the highest level of trust and confidence in your website. EV ensures consumers that their personal and financial information is protected with the highest levels of authentication. Additional verifications are carried out, such as checks on corporate organisation records, contact details of the applicant and whether the business has been in existence for at least 3 years. EV certificates are best suited for business-critical websites.
